The movie: The Apartment. OK another oldie but one definately worth viewing. This show stars Fred MacMurray, Shirley Maclane and Jack Lemon. Although it is somewhat dated. It presents atitudes and mores toward infidelity prevelant during the 1950’s.

MacMurray is fasinating as an executive cheating on his wife. When he starred in Double Indemnity a few years earlier, he actually murdered his girlfriend’s husband for insurance money. Now he only cheats on his wife.

The subject of infidelity and callousness towards women and employees is well handled in this film.

Dad: Movie: We rented “Plenty” with Meryl Sreep, Sam Neill and Charles Dance from 1985. This movie slipped past my radar back in the day but it was a slice of reality that deserves some attention. Streep plays a spy for England in Nazi occupied France during WWll. She has certain experiences during that time that don’t get resolved during the rest of her life and make for uncomfortable if not dangerous situations for her family and friends. The movie ends with no resolution for her issues. Such is life and this movie. Aloha!

Me: Ha nice! So what did you think of the streeps peformance?

Dad: It was a well thought out performance but i wasn’t overly impressed. The film may be carrying some 80’s stylistic baggage .

Me: Yeah? Like what?

Dad: I thought you might ask me that Q. She takes a shot at Sting’s character. It looks a little unbelievable.I think also that it is a very tough role to play and she would have played it better when she was older. I got spoiled by her acting abilities as she matured. Maybe I expected too much.

Kramer v. Kramer. An oldie but definately not moldy. It was good to see a young Merrill having an identity crisis over whether to be responsible for her child or not. She can’t deal with deferring gratification and has to get a job right away. But then she has a second thought after she is successful at her job. Hey what about that son I had with what’s his name? OK I want to raise him now with my new boyfriend. Wait! her husband. Dustin Hoffman doesn’t get to walk away with clean hands either. He is a status seeking chauvinist. Well to Merrill’s credit she does the right thing in the end, sees that she will upset the son’s emotional ties to the father and lets him have custody of the boy.Everyone wins an Academy Award and lives happily ever after.

Soo here’s the latest movie review. We saw Lincoln tonight. I thought it was fantastic. The 2 and a half hours running time went quickly. Daniel Day Lewis looked and acted as if he were Lincoln. All the cast members were beleivable. I loved the congressional debates that were better than barbrawls because they were flinging verbal mud at each other, not fists.I love the way they “made sauage” by bribing the Dems to vote for the 13th. A very moving movie for me Love Dad. —John DeLuca

Update: Also available on this site

I’m watching the Hound of the Baskervilles. Christopher Lee stars. From 1959 in color. The color is richer than that of today. Lee is tall and debonnaire. Hopfully he has acting abilty. I remember he was also in a Star Wars movie.

Ah yes. Holmes is played by Peter Cushing. Quick witted. Powerful deductive reasoning, small and agile. Also compassionate. Good color but definately low budget. filmed in the English countryside where it happened. And yes the Hound is a stuff animal.
